As a follower of Jesus, are you eternally secure and saved? Does the Once saved always align with the Doctrine of Christ? The first time I heard about it, I sensed it contradicted everything the Bible stands for and it didn’t fit the scriptural pattern or doctrine of Christ.

I also felt any bible student with an open and sincere heart for God’s word would see it for what it is.

But like every other false doctrine, it spreads like wild fire and hinders saints from fulfilling God’s ultimate plan for their lives.

Before reading this post, please try and get familiar with this previous post where I talk about Spirit salvation at the New-birth.

I also shared the different components of Man in the Hearing God series. This will enable us to understand Salvation better.

I hope to share scriptural references from the word so we can follow God’s pattern and definition of Eternal life from the Old Testament into the New Testament.

Understand what it means to be eternally secure and don’t assume

It’s easy to assume some terminologies of scripture mean the same as the definition of the world.

But one thing I’ve been learning in my growth is to never assume scripture.

Scripture must interpret scripture. The HolySpirit (the author) must be the one illuminating and interpreting it.

If anything remains unclear, it’s okay to move on to another part of the bible.

With spiritual growth comes deeper insight into God’s word.

So don’t push it.

So what is Eternal life? The first thing we need to know about Eternal life is the definition:

Eternal Salvation is NOT the SAME as ‘making Heaven’

And this is the way to have eternal life—to KNOW you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

john 17:3

The bible hardly defines terms. But Jesus defined the term Eternal life.

He probably did because it’s easy to assume Eternal life is living forever or just going to heaven.

But Eternal life is more than living forever.

Eternal Life is knowing God and living out the Life of God in our Spirit, Soul and Body.

Eternal life is living a sinless life. Becoming like Jesus in deed and truth. Because whoever has eternal life (knows God) cannot sin.

We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Now it’s easy to assume we know God because we are heavenly citizens, but whoever knows God CANNOT Sin. It means your heart has become pure and Christlike in nature.

Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God

Matthew 5:8

To see God in scriptural terms is to know Him, to comprehend Him fully, to discern him and come into the fullness of His nature.

Christ is the Man that CANNOT Sin. He is the beginning of the creation of God (Revelations3:14)

Christ is the ONLY one who truly knows God as He is. So we must become like Him.

To become like Him ushers us into inheriting Eternal Life.

This is why Christ MUST be formed in Us.

No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him

John 1:18

Eternal life is to be inherited in our continuous following of Jesus

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to INHERIT eternal life?”

mark 10:17

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, FOLLOW Me.”

mark 10:21

If eternal life was just based on the New-birth alone, Jesus could have told the young man what he told Nicodemus.

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can SEE the kingdom of God unless they are BORN AGAIN.

john 3:3

But Jesus said in Mark 10:21:

Follow Me!

You can be born again and not follow Jesus/obey Him.

Knowing someone takes time. It’s a process, a deliberate process. We cannot know God in one day or the moment we got born again.

The purpose of our New-birth was to usher us into knowing God.

Hence Paul’s purpose was to Know God.

That I may KNOW Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, BEING CONFORMED to His death

Philippians 3:10

God’s goal for the Newbirth was to usher us into knowing Him and coming to a place where we are eternally saved and secure.

Eternal life is to be pursued. It is to be inherited as we transform and become like Christ

Eternal salvation is obtained through Obedience to God’s will

As we keep following Jesus and obeying his commandments, we will inherit Eternal life.

No obedience, no eternal salvation.

And having been perfected, He became the author of ETERNAL SALVATION to all who OBEY Him.

Hebrew 5:9

This is NOT salvation by works, but living from the inside out and from the victory Christ won for us on the cross.

If we keep choosing our will over God’s, then we are losing out on a chance to KNOW God.

For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption; but he who SOWS to the Spirit shall of the Spirit REAP life everlasting.

Galatians 6:8

If Eternal life was given to us at the Newbirth, we wouldn’t need to reap anything.

But scripture here is telling us ‘we reap what we sow.’

If we are sowing into obeying God, our end is everlasting/eternal life. But if we are obeying flesh and allowing temptations to overthrow us, we will reap corruption.

But he who endures to the end SHALL BE SAVED.

Matthew 24:13

The Scripture is ONE

God is the same in the Old Testament and in the New Testament. Therefore, we must be cautious to read the Bible as a whole book, and not cherry pick verses to defend our motives.

We must bend our hearts to be taught by the author.

So saying we are eternally secure after the New-birth and without continuous growth/obedience IS NOT Scriptural.

Paul was still admonishing the Galatian church against sinning. Just as he warned the Corinthian church.

Because a man who has eternal life/God’s life CANNOT Sin.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy, and rage; rivalries, divisions, factions, and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who practice such things will not INHERIT the kingdom of God

Galatians 5:19-21

Eternal security is AN END to Sin in our bodies. It means your soul is secure, safe and saved from sin forever.

You and God are beginning to think and respond alike.

This is where the climax of spiritual growth brings us.

Till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the FULLNESS of Christ;

Ephesians 4:13

We still have a choice to obey and live for God

In the Old Testament, God saved the Israelites, not with the intention of killing them, but to save them.

They still had a choice. They couldn’t return to Egypt, but they grumbled their way into the promise land until they all died in the wilderness.

Therefore I was angry with that generation, and I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known My ways.’ So I swore on oath in My anger, ‘They shall never enter My rest.’’ See to it, brothers, that none of you has a wicked heart of unbelief that turns away from the living God. But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness

Hebrews 3:10-13

This also applies to us. If we don’t keep seeking God, Eternal life can be missed.

Storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they MAY LAY HOLD on eternal life.

1Timothy 6:19

The above scripture reveals that if we prioritize other things above God, we will miss out on eternal salvation.

Keep yourselves in the Love of God, LOOKING for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto ETERNAL LIFE.

Jude 1:21

Also, just because a man gets born again today doesn’t mean he’s bound in it forever.

God will NEVER hold anyone against their will if they choose to turn back or reject Him after accepting Jesus into their lives.

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

hebrews 10:38

It’s unscriptural to think God will force people to Love Him or stay saved!

Eternal salvation demands our daily surrender to His will

He’s ever willing to save men to the uttermost, but WE MUST be willing too.

If he didn’t force Adam, he WILL NEVER force us.

Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

hebrews 10:29

Now you may wonder: Is it possible to be perfect like Jesus in the flesh?

Yes! It is very possible!

Because the blood of Christ is powerful enough to save us to the uttermost. Not just in confession, but a natural way of life.

But if anyone KEEPS His word, the love of God has been truly PERFECTED in him. BY THIS we know that we are in Him: Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.

If the Word says it, I believe it and that settles it. Not my emotions, experience or feelings. But God’s word.

When we are able to properly balance scriptures from the epistles and trace it back to the Old Testament, we will discover that once saved isn’t always saved.

And our eternal security lies in our continuous obedience and allegiance to Jesus Christ.

My brothers, if ONE OF YOU should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from DEATH and cover over a multitude of sins.

James 5:19-20

What happens when Christians sin?

Bloom with Love. Xx!
