In order to know God’s will in marriage, people have often asked,

“Does God tell us who to marry?”

“Is God going to choose for me?”

How can I know his will for my marriage?

Understanding His will for us in relationships is important in building one. And the only way God’s will can be done is when we are willing to lay down our will and accept His will for our marriage and every other area of our lives.

Are you aware God wants to lead us? His desire is that men will come to live for His glory and this can only happen as we surrender to his plans.

Now when men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they TOOK as wives WHOMEVER THEY CHOSE.

So the LORD said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal.

Genesis 6:1-3

Who are the Sons of God and the Daughters of Men?

In the above scripture we discover Sons of God neglected God’s will when they chose wives for themselves without God’s leading.

Sons of God here were earthly men (Adam’s lineage through Seth), NOT angels.

The daughters of Men were daughters of Cain. God didn’t regard Cain’s lineage as sons and daughters of God. So they became mere Men.

Do you remember Cain had departed from the presence of God and built a city? He was spiritually dead yet could do great exploits.-Genesis 4:16

We have to read that VERSE within the context of scripture.

Kenan was the son of Enosh. Enosh was the son of Seth. Seth was the son of Adam. Adam was the son of God.

luke 3:38

Now you may wonder, how do I know this?

Because Jesus debunked that myth of angels having intercourse with earthly beings in Matthew 22:30.

Besides, in Christ, there is no male or female. God sees humans as Souls.

Spirit beings don’t see the way humans see or perceive things. For their thoughts are higher.

You are MISTAKEN because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will BE LIKE the ANGELS in heaven.

Matthew 22:29

Angels are spirit BEINGS and are structured differently from us. So it is unscriptural to even think angels would have affairs with human beings.

It’s not possible because the Bible isn’t Greek mythology.

Can you imagine a human being having intercourse with an ant? No.

Because you’re different species. They’re so tiny. Your organs are different. Besides why would a man want to mate with an ant?

It IS NOT possible.

Same with angels. Angels were not designed with reproductive organs to mate. They are mighty, spiritual and glorious beings and CANNOT be attracted to humans in a carnal/sensual way.

Only creatures on Earth were given reproductive organs to multiply and our body structures were designed to reproduce.

But in heaven, there’s nothing like that. So angels sleeping with women to birth giants doesn’t fit the scriptural pattern.

It’s safe to believe the bible meant spiritual giants in Genesis since we get to see these men were mighty and renown.

The fall of Man had just happened so men still had ability to do great spiritual exploits. Their children/breed (Cain’s daughters and Seth’s sons) must have caused a catastrophe due to that combination.

So according to this scripture, if you were to ask, ‘Does God tell us who to marry?’ I would say Yes.

But why? You can read more here:

Benefits of accepting God’s will in a relationship

Why is God’s leading important when choosing a spouse?

There have been many thoughts regarding this topic on God choosing spouses for us but we must obtain our answers from God’s word. Knowing God’s will for us in marriage must not be assumed.

From the above scripture, men chose what they felt was right and displeased God in the process. But God doesn’t change. If he chose for Adam (Son of God) in the beginning, then I have no doubts he wants to keep choosing for his children so His will can be birthed on earth. (Malachi 2:15)

If we were to choose for ourselves, then every man would choose what is pleasing to the eye because no one knows the heart of man, except the Spirit of God.

A carnal man chooses what he sees and cannot discern spiritual things. Besides, we don’t know the depths of our heart because the heart of Man is deep. So we must be open to God who sees purely and without bias.

After the fall, Man became sensual and depended on his senses to live. But as we walk by faith, we give God the wheels of our lives.

It’s the reason why we see the pattern in Abraham (Father of Faith) practically choosing for his Son. Just the way God chose for Jesus. Isaac didn’t complain when they brought Rebecca to him. It was his father’s will. And it was God’s will.

And that was enough for him.

The Role of the New Testament in knowing God’s will

The bible is ONE and we must read it with that understanding.

Now you may wonder since that’s the Old testament, but what about the New Testament? Does God tell us who to marry in the New Testament?

A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.

Here, this scripture paints a picture of liberty to marry anyone you want.

But the same Apostle Paul declared to the Roman church, “As many as are LED by the Spirit of God, these are Sons of God.”

This same Paul also declared himself to be a Bondservant of God, meaning his will was no longer his.

Paul also said we are to use our liberty to serve God.

So, if Paul who always lived in obedience is saying something that sounds contrary to obedience and God’s leading, we need to examine his reasons.

  • The Corinthian church was NOT a spiritual church. They were babes in Christ. Paul expressed he couldn’t give them spiritual food YET. Babes cannot understand the weighty importance of God’s will.
  • If you compare this church to the other churches Paul commended, they were unable to handle spiritual matters. So Paul wouldn’t give instructions higher than them.
  • There are some people God wouldn’t mind if they chose to marry anyone. Because God won’t force his will and not all children of God know his will.
  • The more we grow spiritually, the more demands God makes from us.

Seek out God’s will

Do not be unwise, but understand the will of God for your life.-Ephesians 5:17-19.

  • As we grow in the knowledge of God’s will, we submit our will to His. If God talks to us about loving our neighbours, food, clothes, career choices and where to live, then why would He be silent on a weighty matter like marriage? It doesn’t align with scripture.
  • The widow is to marry in the Lord. How do we know who is in the Lord and who isn’t? This can ONLY be spiritually discerned. This is where Leading comes in. Anyone can claim to be a Christian and serve in church but the Lord knows His own.

I hope this post has encouraged anyone trusting God for their spouse to keep trusting and waiting on Him to give you the one he’s ordained for you. Knowing God’s will and doing it is our purpose.

Don’t settle for less. Just keep chasing Christ and everything will fall in place for you.
